Tea Lane Farm is seeking a full-time Farm Manager for 2022
Tea Lane Farm is a thirteen-acre farm located on Martha's Vineyard, with six acres devoted to organic cut flower production and the remaining nine acres to pasture land for sheep. The Tea Lane property includes a 250-year-old farmhouse, several barns, and a greenhouse - on pastoral fields encompassed by lichen covered stone walls. Our farm is just a ten-minute ride to the ocean and is surrounded by 30 acres of conservation land with beautiful walking trails. This will be our tenth year in this location and we are looking forward to another beautiful and productive season. Job Description
We're seeking a Farm Manager to be an integral leader of our team. The Farm Manager will manage all aspects of our production, harvesting and distribution. Field tasks are done by hand and with tractor.
The tasks include crew management, greenhouse propagation, transplanting, seeding, weeding, irrigating, cultivating, harvesting and general field maintenance. This will be a production focused position, but as our farm has a busy floral design aspect, the Farm Manager will need to be flexible in scheduling daily tasks to accommodate all aspects of our working farm.
Tea Lane Farm grows hundreds of varieties of annual and perennial flowers. In addition to growing flowers we:
Design and arrange flowers for weddings and events
Make custom arrangements at the local farmers’ market
Sell wholesale to local florists
Sell from our honor system roadside stand
Our season begins in the end of March and finishes in November. This position includes possibility of onsite housing. Farm Manager Responsibilities:
Manage all tasks and responsibilities of our working farm which includes greenhouse production, crop planning, irrigation, planting, harvesting and processing
Distribute to honor system roadside farmstand, clients, weekly farmers markets and our wholesale accounts
Train and work alongside farm crew as needed to ensure timely completion of daily tasks
Problem solves independently and collaboratively on a daily basis in response to consistent observation and assessment
Act as a representative of Tea Lane Farm to the community
Qualifications:
2 - 3 years experience farming on a productive farm; 2-3 years experience in a management role
Demonstrate knowledge of organic farming practices including crop rotation, cover cropping, composting, IPM, and soil fertility management
Ability to lead and manage farm crew
Ability to thrive under pressure and hustle
Innate attention to detail
Physically capable of all farm labor tasks (comfortably able to lift 50+ lbs)
Excellent work ethic; passionate about farming
Comfortable working collaboratively and independently
Valid driver's license
Schedule and compensation:
Competitive overall package and hourly rate based upon experience
Seasonal farm manager housing on site is an option
40 - 50 hours a week during the growing season
Start date for our Farm Manager is late March
